\u201cI\u2019ve got something I want you to hear,\u201d I told my friend Cathi. Unlike my other dork friends, whose tastes run more towards the eclectic and the banal, classical moreso than industrial, Cathi\u2019s interests are in metal. More specifically, she knows quite a bit about black metal. \u201cWhat is it?\u201d she asked as I put the CD in the player, smiling. \u201cYou\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFields Of Pain\u201d began with the cawing of a crow. \u201cOh my God\u2026\u201d she muttered before the song began blaring pan flute. \u201cZamfir should really pick better projects,\u201d I tell her as the metal riffs chime in like clockwork. During the second track, \u201cLost Time\u201d, she insists that I either stop the CD or change the track. I oblige the latter and we last for another two minutes of \u201cTo A Friend\u201d before we have to stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cWant me to copy it for you? Bring it by your house?\u201d I joke. \u201cIf you do, I\u2019ll shoot you on sight.\u201d<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t blame her. I didn\u2019t necessarily need someone to really tell me this band isn\u2019t good, but it\u2019s nice to have confirmation that this music isn\u2019t even acceptable within the grimy constraints of black metal. No matter how Scandinavian a band may be, it\u2019s still not much excuse for this combination of typical metal, flute, keyboards, overwrought growl-y male vocals, and shrieking operatic female background vocals.<\/p>\n

Sure, maybe you\u2019re into the goth-metal thing, but I still really can\u2019t see this as inspiring. At best, it\u2019s mildly amusing. At worst, this CD might give you herpes.<\/p>\n

After listening, consult a physician if itching, swelling, or painful urination occur.<\/p>\n
